Tell Me About Yourself - Sample Answers & Scripts!

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

Previously, I created a post on the secret recipe to absolutely nail “Tell me about yourself”. If you haven’t read it yet, I really recommend you check it out. Today, as part 2 on this topic, I’m going to give you several, concrete sample answers and scripts for different types of roles from a wide range of industries so you can get a clearer idea and, also, save time.

As I mentioned in my last article, the secret success formula to tackling “Tell me about yourself” is to start with the JD and then build your response according to the employer’s needs (instead of starting with your own experience first).

So what I’m going to do today is to review 3 JDs of different types of roles (including e-commerce, accounting, and HR), and go through their key requirements (or keywords). And then, we will draft relevant and convincing responses together. As I’m sure you can appreciate, it doesn’t really matter what JD or role we choose as our examples at the end of the day because we are learning the concept. You can apply what you learn today in any position or industry.

You can find the sample answer scripts below. Enjoy!

Sample Answer 1

Thank you for having me here today. My name is Matt and I have 5 years of experience with e-commerce operations.

Currently, I’m an e-commerce manager at ABC, where I manage the firm’s online shopping website, including CMS, analytics, logistics, and customer service, as well as achieving 99.9% uptime and performance satisfaction through proactive monitoring. At my previous firm, I worked extensively with Shopify and Google Analytics while managing their e-commerce platform.

I understand you’re looking for an e-commerce manager with a hands-on experience in website operation, customer service, and price checking, all of which I am highly proficient with. I am confident that I can immediately add value and contribute if given the opportunity.

Sample Answer 2:

It’s great to be here. Thank you for considering my application. My name is Alicia, and I have over 6 years of experience in accounting.

Previously, I was an Accounting Officer at XYZ (an insurance firm), where I worked on end-to-end accounting operations, including payment processing, account reconciliation, and clearing/settlements to support the life insurance business. In my current role at ABC, I perform general accounting operations as well as month-end closing tasks and system projects.

I am fully versed in general accounting, have exposure to life insurance, and am familiar with SAP and Excel. I am confident that I can hit the ground running right away and make a tangible contribution if given the opportunity.

Sample Answer 3:

First, thank you for the opportunity to meet you and learn more about your firm. I find what you’re doing in the b2c digital payment industry fascinating.

My name is Chris. I have proven, hands-on experience managing full-spectrum HR services, including workforce, employee relations, performance and talent management, and providing people strategy. In my previous firm, ABC, which was a smaller-sized, fast-paced financial firm, I provided end-to-end HR services as well as working closely with business leaders and introducing/implementing best practices. Currently, I’m a Senior HR Officer at XYZ where I lead the talent management and employee relations for the firm.

I work well with people and independently, have a minor in Human Resources Management, and have hands-on experience working for smaller firms where I need to wear multiple hats. If given the opportunity, I will be able to hit the ground running with minimal training and be a valuable addition to your team right away.
