Banking Tech Sector

  1. From past experience, we usually find Q2 and Q3 to be the most active quarters for banking tech hiring. This year, however, Q3 and the first half of Q4 were a lot more “happening” in terms of hiring. Overall, there was plenty of hiring activity across front office development teams at tier one banks this year (CS, Citi, SocGen, DB, GS, BAML, MS).

  2. Full stack Java developers were most in demand. There was also a trend to move away from the traditional C#/WPF UI to a more lightweight Javascript based UI (Angular, React, etc). There was also an increasing demand for technologists with experience in machine learning / AI experience / Big Data Engineering as many banks were investing in AI-driven Electronic Trading Systems.

  3. Location wise, Hong Kong was most active, followed by Singapore and Japan. Interesting change we noticed is that more banks are now willing to have their regional headcounts based in Sydney which is a new trend.

Insurance Tech Sector

  1. Although other Insurance Firms were mostly hiring, AXA cut around 250 IT jobs in Hong Kong and moved them over to Manila and Kuala Lumpur.

  2. Insurance Firms were beefing up their Innovation Teams and we saw an increasing trend which showed that they preferred to hire from outside of the industry in order to bring more fresh ideas to their teams.

General Technology sector

  1. We have been asked many times if we ever get Blockchain or Crytocurrency-related roles. The answer is – we have had some Blockchain consulting roles but they are not so common (yet). We did NOT however get any roles to do with crypocurrency although we did hear of some startup trading firms that specialize in building platforms for trading cryptocurrencies.

  2. In terms of hiring in the Cloud area, the most popular roles were Cloud Solutions Architects (advisors / consultants on IT strategy and how to implement cloud into an existing IT infrastructure), Big Data Architects and Full Stack / Development Managers / Architects (development leads with strong experience of designing and delivering enterprise / mobile / web / microservices apps via AWS, Azure, or Google cloud platforms).

  3. Hiring in Infrastructure Security and IT Risk was also prominent as firms were looking to either shore up their defenses or bring in IT Audit & Review expertise to help identify areas of weaknesses across the organisation.

Top Articles

  1. I want to link to this article by David Webb which pours some cold water over the supposedly ‘hot’ future of Bitcoin.

As far as 2018 is concerned, given the increase in hiring in Q4 this year and the foreseeable demand for strong IT talent in Hong Kong, we expect hiring in 2018 to be stronger than it was in 2017.
